Although the British took the field and won the battle, Major-General Nathaniel Greene lost 264 men and saved his army by retreating. Where as Lt. General Cornwallis lost 532 men which was about a quarter of his army. Charles Fox, a British politician opposed to the war declared, "another such victory would ruin the British army.
